Worried Your Dental Implant Is Going To Be Painful? Here’s How to Reduce The Pain!

September 30, 2022

Undergoing dental implant surgery is no easy feat. It’s a long procedure that requires dedication and patience. And in the end, it’s all worth it. You’re rewarded with a long-lasting, reliable result.

Not to mention, a dental implant looks amazing and natural, but it also functions like one. However, many people hesitate to get a dental implant despite its realistic qualities and benefits.

The first thing they ask is, ‘Is getting a dental implant painful?’ — The answer to which, of course, depends on how well you prepare for it and take care of it.

Is Getting a Dental Implant Painful?

The procedure of getting a dental implant is painless. Since you’re under anesthesia and heavily sedated, you’re unlikely to feel anything. It’s only after the procedure that the pain starts to settle in.

However, it majorly depends on the surgery. For instance, it will be more painful if you need bone grafting before your dental implant surgery. On the other hand, if it’s a straightforward surgery where your jawbone is healthy enough, you might not feel the intensity as much. Most patients total the pain up to a two out of ten on the pain scale.

How Long Does The Pain Last After A Dental Implant?

Depending on the type of surgery, the pain can last for a few weeks at most. That is to say, the overall time it takes for a dental implant to fuse with your gums, and become one, is a bit longer than usual — especially given the nature of the surgery.

Nonetheless, it typically takes four months or more for the implant to settle in. As for the pain, it only lasts for a week or two.

In fact, after 3 to 5 days, you can go back to work or school. It’s okay to resume your day-to-day activities. But try to avoid physical sports as much as you can.

Aftercare Tips to Prevent The Pain

In order to reduce the pain, you can try to follow the tips mentioned below. Make sure to also heed the advice your dentist gives after the surgery. This includes what you can eat, what activities you can partake in, etc.

  • Do not drink from straws after the surgery.
  • Use a saltwater rinse every day to get rid of the bacteria in your mouth.
  • Avoid going to the gym or working out your body in any way possible.
  • Stick to room-temperature food. Do not eat or drink anything that is too hot or cold.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Use an ice pack to soothe the pain and tenderness.
  • Rest as much as you can.
  • Take pain-relief medications or prescribed antibiotics to lessen the pain.
  • Try not to lift anything heavy.
  • Immediately after the surgery, for the next two days, stick to a liquid or pureed diet.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush your teeth and gums.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Visit your dentist regularly.
